Metodo di simulazione via computer dell’ontogenesi di un sistema biologico e, opzionalmente, di generazione di un protocollo di coltura – A Proof of Concept project funded by LIFTT S.p.A.

The project “Metodo di simulazione via computer dell’ontogenesi di un sistema biologico e, opzionalmente, di generazione di un protocollo di coltura”, aka cultūrā PoC LIFTT, started the cultūrā technology transfer initiative in the context of the Intelligent Biofabrication research line at SMILIES. In particular, this project focused on two primary activities. The first was identifying a use case for prototype validation. The second one the prototyping process itself. Modeling of the chosen use case, the biofabrication of an epithelium, relied on a comprehensive collection and integration of information from existing literature. This structured knowledge informed the initial iteration of the computational model, which integrated with the developed prototype version.

The prototype development depended on the modeling, and vice versa. In parallel, implementing the simulation framework and Design Space Exploration (DSE) involved integrating open frameworks into the project. Specifically, the prototype implemented a new co-simulation framework for simulations, while the MicroGP optimization framework enabled DSE.

The cultūrā PoC LIFTT project developed a software system prototype for generating biofabrication protocols. In this sense, the development of the prototype worked around three main milestones. The first one was the computational model of the chosen use case. The second one was the functional prototype for the use case and the protocols generated from it. Finally, the third one was the in-silico validation of the prototype for the selected use case.

In conclusion, the development and validation of the computational model and the prototype offer promising advancements in protocol generation.
