The SMILIES research group is part of the Department of Control and Computer Engineering (DAUIN) of Politecnico di Torino, one of Europe’s Leading Research Universities.
Welcome to the “reSilient coMputer archItectures and LIfE Sciences” (SMILIES) group, at the Department of Control and Computer Engineering, Politecnico di Torino. Our team is a dynamic blend of computer architects, computer scientists, and domain-specific researchers, creating a highly multi-disciplinary environment.
Multidisciplinary Expertise
Computer and electronic engineers, physicists, biomedical engineers, and biologists working together across disciplinary boundaries.
International Perspective
A highly international group where diverse cultural and scientific perspectives enrich research and collaboration.
Positive Working Environment
We value a supportive, respectful, and stimulating environment that fosters growth, creativity, and teamwork.
Real-World Impact
From resilient computing infrastructures to life sciences, our research is driven by meaningful scientific and societal challenges.
At SMILIES, we specialize in the convergence of computer architectures, innovative programming paradigms, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and algorithms. Our expertise extends to the application of these skills in pursuit of domain-specific scientific objectives.
We focus on two primary application domains: developing reliable and secure (“resilient“) computer architectures for safety-critical domains such as automotive, aerospace, railways, and other safety-critical infrastructures and advancing holistic computing techniques for knowledge discovery in Complex Systems for Life Sciences. This includes areas like bioinformatics, systems and computational biology, biofabrication, brain dynamics, and more.
Our key strength lies in the diversity of our members’ backgrounds and the overarching multi-disciplinary approach of our group. We firmly believe that innovative solutions emerge at the intersection of different domains. Consequently, we actively promote cross-pollination of ideas from diverse fields, embracing this philosophy in our daily research activities. Join us in exploring the boundless possibilities that arise from the fusion of resilient computer architectures and life sciences.
DAUIN@Politecnico di Torino is one of European’s
Leading Computer Engineering Departments. The Department is the point of reference at the Politecnico di Torino for the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which studies the methodologies and technologies used for the management, processing, and transmission of information.
