As I reflect on the past year, I would like to take a moment to look back on an important chapter of my academic journey that concluded earlier this year with the successful defense of my PhD thesis.
My PhD thesis, titled "Fast and Accurate Prediction of the Impact of Approximate Operators on a Complex Computation," focused on Design Space Exploration methodologies for applying Approximate Computing techniques to different target designs. The thesis proposed two complementary approaches. The first introduced an interval arithmetic-based methodology for fast prediction of the impact of precision reduction in Spiking Neural Networks, enabling efficient exploration of approximation opportunities. The second proposed a Reinforcement Learning-based framework capable of automatically exploring approximation opportunities to trade off accuracy for power consumption and execution time. This work contributes to the development of more energy-efficient and resource-aware computing systems through systematic exploration of possible approximations for a target design.
My PhD journey has been filled with challenges, learning experiences, and valuable collaborations that have greatly shaped my research path. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to my supervisors, Prof. Stefano Di Carlo and Prof. Alessandro Savino, whose guidance and insightful feedback played a pivotal role in bringing this research to fruition.
This research was conducted as part of the APROPOS project, funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks. I am also deeply grateful for the opportunity to have been part of the #APROPOS_Project network and for all the collaborations, experiences, and connections that came with it.
With this milestone behind me, I look forward to building on the knowledge and experience gained throughout this journey and applying my expertise in Approximate Computing, Design Space Exploration, and AI hardware to new research and development challenges. I am excited to connect with new people, explore new opportunities, and contribute to impactful research and innovation.
