π« Happy to share that yesterday I presented our novel research work on the EHWGesture dataset!
The paper titled "Fake It Till You Make It: Investigating the Impact of Simulated Sensor Modalities on Clinical Gesture Understanding" was presented at the Neuromorphic Vision (NeVi) Workshop 3rd edition at European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) 2026!
π In this work supervised by Stefano Di Carlo and Alessandro Savino at SMILIES Polito Research Group, we exploited EHWGesture to answer a simple question: when evaluating clinical gestures in a real world application, we may not have access to multiple modalities other than RGB, such as depth maps and neuromorphic vision. So, what happens if we replace missing modalities with synthetic modalities generated by SOTA models and algorithms? The results confirm simulated modalities could still help us achieve very good accuracy in gesture understanding, i.e. gesture recognition but also gesture quality assessment, when the real sensor is replaced. Pre-print coming soon! In the meantime, you can find the code here: https://github.com/gianluca-amprimo/FakeIt-Clinical-Gesture-Understanding.
πΉ This analysis was possible thanks the uniqueness of EHWGesture , that provides multi-view, synchronized and spatially calibrated RGB, Depth, Neuromorphic vision and motion capture data of clinical gestures used in Parkinson's disease assessment. Wanna know more about the dataset? Paper: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/11374567, GitHub repository with open access to the data: https://github.com/smilies-polito/EHWGesture .
This work also marks the next step in our collaboration with the colleagues Alberto Ancilotto and Elisabetta Farella from Fondazione Bruno Kessler – FBK. Always a pleasure to work together!
Finally, I would also like to thanks Federico Becattini and the other co-organizers for including me in the Technical Program Commitee, it was my pleasure to contribute to this amazing event for the neuromorphic vision community!
